Brought-up in Herefordshire. Moved to live with his brother, Arthur, in Sudbury, Middlesex and joined the Police Service where he remained during the 1939-45 War. Left the police to run a Post Office in Guilsborough, Northamptonshire from about 1945 until 1955.

Moved to Chorleywood, Herts. and bought a Post Office. Subsequently sold it and opened a Sandwich Bar until finally retiring in 1968. Holidayed in South Africa and then moved to Marlow Bottom; then spent six months on the Isle of Wight; and finally moved to Verwood, Dorset where he suffered heart attacks over a few years and eventually died in Poole General Hospital, Dorset.
